Heavy Metal
Heavy Metal
The 4000-tonnage SD Newton, constructed in 1976, functioned as a research and survey vessel until 2010. Subsequently, she was decommissioned and ultimately scrapped in 2012 in Ghent. Once pulled ashore, she was completely at the mercy of gravity, with no buoyancy to keep her afloat. Like a beached whale, she was being cannibalized, her metal hull dismantled and torn apart to be recycled. Her helplessness evoked a certain pity. The scraps of metal lying around were reminiscent of abstract sculptures. Their injuries caught the eye and so they came into the picture, to their imaginary place, where they are the case in their disembodiment and absence of function.
